Caux Palace is one of Montreux’s most dramatic landmarks, a vast Belle Époque hotel perched high above the lake like a fairytale fortress. Opened in 1902, it was once among the most luxurious hotels in Europe, attracting royalty, artists, and wealthy travelers who arrived by cogwheel train to enjoy its mountain air and panoramic views. Its sheer scale—turrets, balconies, and a sweeping façade—reflects the optimism of the era. Inside, the most striking space is the Grand Hall, a monumental room lined with carved wood, chandeliers, and decorative motifs inspired by Alpine folklore. It was designed for lavish balls and concerts, and its acoustics still impress visitors today. The historic dining room preserves original Belle Époque décor, including ornate columns and painted friezes that evoke early‑20th‑century glamour. Another highlight is the conference wing, where the palace hosted international peace gatherings after World War II. Archival photographs and period objects recount how the building shifted from luxury tourism to global dialogue. Smaller salons throughout the palace reveal stained‑glass details, antique furniture, and panoramic windows framing Lake Geneva.
Montreux Switzerland
The Caux Palace is a grand Belle Époque building high above Montreux, in the village of Caux, canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Set on a forested terrace at around 1,000 metres, it overlooks the whole Lake Geneva basin, the Swiss Riviera and the distant Alpine chain. Designed by architect Eugène Jost and opened in 1902 as a luxury hotel, the palace now serves as an international conference and seminar centre run by Initiatives of Change. Caux is reached by a scenic train ride from Montreux on the line towards Rochers de Naye, passing through vineyards and pine woods. From the village, walking paths lead through the forest and along the mountain slopes, with views down to the lake and across to France. A short descent brings hikers into the upper districts of Montreux, close to the Freddie Mercury penthouse above Territet and the lakeside promenade. Further down lie the town’s main attractions: the Casino Barrière with the Queen Studio Experience, the Auditorium Stravinski and the venues of the Montreux Jazz Festival, the covered market, and the lakefront with its statues and subtropical parks. Boat and train connections from Montreux provide easy access to Chillon Castle and the Lavaux vineyards, making the Caux Palace a striking high‑level viewpoint above the cultural heart of the Montreux Riviera.
