The Regional Museum of Celje, housed in the Princely Palace, offers one of Slovenia’s most immersive journeys through local history. The palace itself is a major attraction: once the seat of the powerful Counts of Celje, it preserves Renaissance portals, Baroque halls, and fragments of medieval architecture that make the building part of the exhibition. One of the most interesting facts is that the museum holds one of the country’s richest archaeological collections. The Roman Celeia section is a highlight, presenting mosaics, inscriptions, everyday tools, and reconstructions that bring the ancient city to life. Visitors can also explore medieval armour, noble portraits, and objects that reveal how Celje evolved from a fortified settlement into a regional centre. Inside, the restored Baroque rooms display furniture, textiles, and decorative arts that show how Styrian nobility lived. The grand staircase and vaulted ceilings add atmosphere, turning each room into a historical stage. Location

Celeia – City Beneath the City is an archaeological exhibition site in the center of Celje, located under Knežji Dvor on Muzejski trg. It reveals the remains of Roman Celeia, one of the most important Roman towns in what is now Slovenia. Because it’s in the Princely Palace, you’re already at one of Celje’s top historic spots. In the same complex you can see the Celje Ceiling, a Baroque painted hall, and collections on the Counts of Celje. Right across Muzejski trg is the Old Counts’ Mansion, the museum’s second building, and next to it is the Celje Museum of Recent History with Herman’s Den, a favorite for families. A short stroll leads to Prešernova ulica, the main street with cafés, the Town Hall, and Celje Cathedral. The Savinja River promenade is nearby for a relaxing walk. Above town, Celje Castle dominates the skyline. The medieval fortress is about 15 minutes uphill from the city center and offers towers, exhibitions, and views over the valley.
