Cathedral of Saint Daniel

The Cathedral of Saint Daniel is one of Celje’s oldest and most atmospheric landmarks, a church whose origins reach back to the 13th century. Its architecture blends Romanesque foundations with later Gothic and Baroque additions, creating a layered structure that reflects the city’s long spiritual history. Dedicated to Saint Daniel, the cathedral has served as Celje’s main parish church for centuries and remains a focal point of local identity. One of the most interesting facts is the cathedral’s unusual bell tower. Originally freestanding, it was later connected to the main structure, and its height was increased over time. The tower’s bells are among the oldest in the region, with inscriptions that reveal medieval craftsmanship and devotion. Inside, visitors find a serene Gothic nave with pointed arches and slender columns that draw the eye toward the high altar. The Baroque main altar is richly decorated, featuring expressive sculptures and gilded details that contrast beautifully with the church’s older stonework. Several side chapels contain fine religious artworks, including painted altarpieces and carved furnishings that show the evolution of sacred art in Styria.
