The Church of St. George is Ptuj’s defining landmark, its tall Gothic tower rising above the old town like a stone compass. First mentioned in the 12th century, the church has been rebuilt many times, creating a layered interior where Romanesque foundations, Gothic arches, and Baroque chapels coexist. One of its most intriguing features is the tilted tower roof, a result of centuries of repairs that gave the church its instantly recognisable silhouette. Inside, visitors find a calm, atmospheric nave lined with fresco fragments and sculpted details that reveal how local craftsmen shaped Ptuj’s religious identity. The high altar, richly decorated with gilded carvings, stands as a Baroque showpiece, while side chapels contain paintings of Styria’s saints and patrons. The Church of St. George is located in the center of Ptuj, Slovenia, on Slovenski trg, the town’s main square. It is the parish church of Ptuj and one of the most important Gothic monuments in the country. The church dates back to the 12th century, with major Gothic reconstruction in the 15th century. Its exterior features a tall bell tower and three naves, while the interior holds Gothic frescoes, Baroque altars, and notable tombstones of Ptuj nobles. The church has long been a spiritual and cultural landmark for the oldest recorded town in Slovenia. Right in front of the church stands the Roman Orpheus Monument, a 5th-century tombstone that has become a symbol of Ptuj. The Town Hall and colorful historic houses line the same square, creating a picturesque medieval setting. A short walk uphill leads to Ptuj Castle, home to the Ptuj–Ormož Regional Museum with views over the Drava River and vineyards.
