Mestni Stolp, the City Tower of Ptuj, stands beside the Church of St. George as one of the town’s most recognisable silhouettes. Although it appears to be part of the church, it is an independent civic structure, built in the 16th century as a symbol of municipal pride and authority. Its distinctive onion‑shaped roof, added in the Baroque period, gives the tower a charming, almost theatrical profile that dominates Ptuj’s skyline. Inside, the tower preserves its original narrow stairways and thick stone walls, reminders of its defensive and ceremonial roles. The lower levels once housed the town’s fire watch and bell keepers, who monitored the streets from above. The historic bells, still in use, mark Ptuj’s daily rhythm and have accompanied every major event in the town for centuries. Visitors can also see fragments of older architectural elements incorporated into the tower during renovations, revealing how Ptuj reused materials from earlier medieval structures.

The Mestni Stolp, or City Tower, and the bell tower of St. George’s Church are located together in the center of Ptuj, Slovenia, on Slovenski trg, the town’s main square. Its white façade and clock face make it one of Ptuj’s most recognizable landmarks. Right beside it rises the Gothic bell tower of the Church of St. George, the parish church dating to the 12th century with later Gothic reconstruction. The towers stand in the middle of Ptuj’s old town, so many attractions are within easy walking distance. At their base is the Roman Orpheus Monument, a 5th-century tombstone displayed on the square. The Town Hall and colorful merchant houses surround the square, while a short uphill walk leads to Ptuj Castle. The castle houses the main collections of the Ptuj–Ormož Regional Museum and offers sweeping views over the Drava River and vineyards. Nearby you can also visit the Dominican Monastery and Minorite Monastery, both important cultural venues today. The Drava River promenade is close for relaxed walks, and the historic Ptuj Wine Cellar offers tastings in one of Slovenia’s oldest cellars. Terme Ptuj thermal spa is just a few minutes away.
