Ptuj Castle rises above the old town as one of Slovenia’s most characterful fortresses, a place where medieval defence, noble elegance, and regional folklore meet under one roof. Its halls preserve centuries of aristocratic life, from lavish Baroque salons to intimate private chambers filled with portraits, tapestries, and finely crafted furniture. One of the most intriguing features is the castle’s Knights’ Hall, where 15th‑century frescoes depict chivalric scenes with vivid colour and surprising detail. Inside, the Ptuj–Ormož Regional Museum presents several standout collections. The Armoury displays weapons and armour used across Styria, offering insight into the region’s turbulent past. The Music Salon holds rare instruments, including beautifully decorated lutes and violins once played by noble families. The castle also houses Slovenia’s most important collection of Kurent masks, linking the fortress to Ptuj’s famous carnival tradition.

Location

Ptuj Castle is located in Ptuj, Slovenia, perched on a hill above the old town and the Drava River. The castle dominates the skyline of Slovenia’s oldest town and is one of its most recognizable landmarks. The fortress has roots in the 11th century, though most of the present structure reflects Renaissance and Baroque rebuilding. Today it serves as the main site of the Ptuj–Ormož Regional Museum, displaying collections of medieval weapons and armor, musical instruments, traditional kurent carnival masks, tapestries, furniture, and fine art. Just below the castle, Ptuj’s old town is easily reached on foot. There you can explore the Gothic Church of St. George, the Roman Orpheus Monument in the main square, the Town Hall, and the Dominican Monastery, which also hosts museum exhibitions. The Drava River promenade is nearby for walks and cafés with river views. Wine lovers should visit the historic Ptuj Wine Cellar at the foot of the castle hill, one of the oldest in Slovenia, known for its vast collection and local varieties like Šipon. For relaxation, Terme Ptuj thermal spa is a short drive from the center. During February, the streets come alive with kurentovanje, the traditional carnival, while the castle itself hosts concerts and events year-round.
