Dolenjska Museum in Novo Mesto is one of Slovenia’s most engaging regional museums, celebrated for its exceptional archaeological collections and its ability to bring the rich history of the Dolenjska region to life. One of its most fascinating facts is its connection to the famous Situla Art: Novo Mesto is one of Europe’s most important archaeological sites for Iron Age situlas—finely decorated bronze vessels that reveal stories of warriors, rituals, and everyday life more than 2,500 years ago. Inside, the museum unfolds across several departments. The archaeological section showcases Iron Age graves, jewellery, weapons, and complete situlas that highlight the sophistication of the Hallstatt culture. The cultural‑historical department presents Novo Mesto’s medieval and Baroque development, including guild items, traditional costumes, and objects from local noble families. The ethnological exhibits recreate rural interiors, tools, and crafts from the Dolenjska countryside, offering a vivid sense of daily life before industrialisation.

The Dolenjska Museum is located in the center of Novo Mesto, the main cultural hub of Slovenia’s Dolenjska region. Housed in a historic building on Muzejska ulica, just a short walk from the old town core, the museum is the central institution for preserving the heritage of the Lower Carniola area. Its collections span archaeology, ethnology, cultural history, and art. From the museum, Novo Mesto’s charming old town is only minutes away. The town center sits on a bend of the Krka River, with picturesque streets, cafes, and the main square, Glavni trg. A short walk leads to Kapitelj Hill, home to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas with its Gothic and baroque elements and the famous Tintoretto altarpiece. Below the cathedral, the Kandija Bridge connects the old town to the leafy banks of the Krka, perfect for riverside strolls. Nearby you’ll also find the Franciscan Monastery with its library and baroque church. For nature and wine, the surrounding Dolenjska hills are dotted with vineyards and zidanice, traditional wine cottages, offering tastings of the local Cviček wine. A brief drive takes you to Otočec Castle, set on a small island in the Krka River and now a luxury hotel with a scenic park and golf course.
