Grm Castle in Novo Mesto is a refined Baroque manor with deep historical roots, standing just outside the old town amid a peaceful park. First mentioned in the 14th century, it was later transformed by noble families into an elegant residence rather than a defensive fortress. One interesting fact is that Grm Castle became an important cultural centre in the 18th and 19th centuries, hosting salons, musical evenings, and gatherings that shaped Novo Mesto’s intellectual life. Inside, the castle offers a sequence of bright, spacious halls with high ceilings and understated Baroque detailing. Today it houses the Dolenjska Museum’s educational and administrative departments, but several rooms retain their historical charm. Visitors can see period furniture, portraits of former owners, and displays connected to the region’s cultural development. Temporary exhibitions often animate the interior, ranging from local history to contemporary art. A highlight is the castle’s chapel, a quiet space with delicate decorative elements that reflect the building’s noble past. Grm Castle is located on the edge of Novo Mesto, the main town of Slovenia’s Dolenjska region. Set just above the Grm neighborhood, the castle stands on a gentle hill surrounded by a large park and an arboretum with century-old trees. Built in the late 16th century as a Renaissance manor house, it was later remodeled in classical style. From Grm Castle it’s a short walk or drive down to Novo Mesto’s old town center. The historic core lies on a bend of the Krka River, with Glavni trg, the main square, offering cafes, shops, and colorful buildings. Above the square rises Kapitelj Hill with the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, famous for its Gothic and baroque elements and the Tintoretto altarpiece. The Kandija Bridge and riverside paths along the Krka are ideal for relaxing walks with river views. Close by you can visit the Dolenjska Museum, which presents regional archaeology and history, and Jakčev dom, an art gallery dedicated to painter Božidar Jakac. The Franciscan Monastery with its baroque church and library is another nearby site. Just outside town, the Dolenjska hills are covered in vineyards and traditional wine cottages called zidanice, where you can taste the local Cviček wine. A short drive away is Otočec Castle, set on a small island in the Krka River.
