Baletna domačija in Novo Mesto is a unique cultural gem, known as the birthplace of Slovenian ballet tradition. The estate belonged to the Kovač family, whose daughter, Pia Kovač, became one of the country’s earliest ballet pioneers. Her dedication turned this quiet rural homestead into an unexpected centre of artistic training in the early 20th century. This unusual fusion of countryside life and classical dance is one of the most charming facts about the house. Inside, visitors can explore rooms preserved in their original rustic style, offering a glimpse into everyday life at the time when ballet shoes and farm tools coexisted under one roof. The small exhibition presents photographs, personal items, and early costumes that trace the beginnings of ballet in Novo Mesto. A recreated practice corner shows how young dancers trained with improvised equipment long before professional studios existed.

Baletna domačija is located in the old town center of Novo Mesto, the cultural hub of Slovenia’s Dolenjska region. The house sits on a quiet street just steps from the main square, Glavni trg. This renovated historic townhouse is named after the Ballet family, notable merchants and citizens of Novo Mesto in the 18th and 19th centuries. From Baletna domačija, Novo Mesto’s old town is easy to explore on foot. Glavni trg is only a minute away, lined with cafes, shops, and colorful facades that capture the town’s atmosphere. A short uphill walk leads to Kapitelj Hill and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, known for its Gothic and baroque features and the famous Tintoretto altarpiece. From the hill you get sweeping views over the Krka River as it bends around the town. Down by the river, the Kandija Bridge and promenade offer scenic walks along the water. Also nearby are Jakčev dom, the gallery dedicated to painter Božidar Jakac, and the Dolenjska Museum, which presents regional archaeology and history. The Franciscan Monastery with its baroque church and library is another close landmark. Just outside town, the rolling Dolenjska hills are covered in vineyards and zidanice, traditional wine cottages where you can taste local Cviček wine. A short drive away is Otočec Castle, set on a small island in the Krka River.
