Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Novo Mesto is the spiritual heart of the city, rising above the old town with a history that reaches back to the 14th century. Dedicated to St. Nicholas, protector of sailors and merchants, it reflects Novo Mesto’s early role as a trading centre along the Krka River. One of its most interesting facts is its unusual blend of styles: a Gothic foundation reshaped by Baroque masters, including the famed Venetian sculptor Francesco Robba, who created the cathedral’s magnificent main altar. Inside, the cathedral feels both solemn and richly detailed. The Robba altar dominates the presbytery with dynamic marble figures and a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. Side chapels contain finely carved altars, gilded decorations, and paintings that trace centuries of devotion in Dolenjska. The vaulted ceiling carries subtle fresco work, while the organ—renowned for its warm tone—often fills the space during concerts.

Originally built in the 15th century and later remodeled, it is the seat of the Diocese of Novo Mesto. From the cathedral, you have sweeping views over Novo Mesto’s red rooftops and the Krka River below. Just down the hill lies Glavni trg, the main square, with its cafes, shops, and historic buildings that form the heart of the old town. The riverside promenade and Kandija Bridge are nearby, offering scenic walks along the Krka. Within a short stroll you’ll also find the Dolenjska Museum, which covers regional archaeology and history, and Jakčev dom, an art gallery dedicated to painter Božidar Jakac. The Franciscan Monastery, with its baroque church and library, is another close landmark. A few minutes away is Baletna domačija, a museum-house showing burgher life in old Novo Mesto. Outside the town center, the surrounding Dolenjska hills are covered in vineyards and traditional wine cottages called zidanice, where visitors can taste Cviček, the local wine.
