Church of St. Donatus

The Church of St. Donatus is Zadar’s most famous landmark and one of the finest examples of early medieval architecture in Croatia. Built in the 9th century on the remains of the Roman forum, it embodies a rare circular design inspired by Byzantine models. Its massive stone walls and simple geometry give it a striking, almost sculptural presence that sets it apart from other Dalmatian churches. One of the most interesting facts is that the church incorporates Roman columns and stone blocks directly into its structure. These reused elements are clearly visible inside, where fragments of ancient temples form part of the flooring and support. This blend of Roman and early Christian heritage makes St. Donatus a living archaeological puzzle. The interior is intentionally austere. There is no traditional altar or decoration; instead, the space is defined by pure architectural form. The acoustics are exceptional, turning the church into a celebrated venue for classical concerts, especially during the Musical Evenings in St. Donatus festival. Standing inside, you can sense how sound moves through the circular volume with unusual clarity.

Location

The Church of St. Donatus is located in the very heart of Zadar's historic old town, on the ancient Roman Forum square. It is the most recognizable symbol of the city, a monumental round building from the 9th century built on top of Roman foundations. Its simple, powerful stone architecture stands out immediately, and because it sits on a wide open square, you can admire it from all sides. Its location could not be better for sightseeing. Right next to it is the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, the largest cathedral in Dalmatia with a bell tower you can climb for a beautiful view over the old town, the sea and the islands. On the same square you will also find the remains of the Roman Forum, with ancient columns and ruins that are part of everyday life in Zadar, and the Archaeological Museum with its rich collection from antiquity. A short walk from St. Donatus brings you to Narodni trg, the People's Square, the lively centre of the old town with cafes, the City Guard building and the City Loggia. If you continue towards the waterfront, you will reach the famous Sea Organ, where waves create music through pipes under the promenade, and the Greeting to the Sun light installation, especially magical at sunset.
