Church of St. Chrysogonus

The Church of St. Chrysogonus is one of Zadar’s finest Romanesque monuments, consecrated in 1175 and dedicated to the city’s patron saint. Built on the foundations of an earlier early‑Christian basilica, it reflects the height of medieval craftsmanship in Dalmatia. Its façade is simple yet elegant, with finely carved portals and harmonious proportions typical of the region’s Romanesque style. One of the most interesting facts is that the church once formed part of a Benedictine monastery, long since vanished. This monastic past explains the building’s unusually spacious interior, designed to accommodate liturgical processions and communal prayer. The triple‑apsed eastern end is a rare architectural feature in Croatia, giving the church a distinctive silhouette. Inside, visitors can admire the massive stone columns and semicircular arches that create a rhythmic, almost sculptural interior. Although much of the original decoration was lost over centuries of war and reconstruction, fragments of medieval frescoes and carved capitals remain, offering glimpses into its former splendour. The main altar area preserves Romanesque stonework with characteristic interlace patterns.
