Biščević House

Biščević House, perched dramatically above the Neretva River, is one of Mostar’s finest examples of Ottoman residential architecture. Built in 1635, it is famous for its wooden doksat—a projecting balcony that seems to float over the river. This unique feature made the house both a defensive lookout and a symbol of prestige, and it remains one of the most photographed traditional structures in the city. Inside, visitors step into a world shaped by centuries‑old customs. The interior preserves original low seating areas, embroidered textiles, carved wooden ceilings and finely crafted cupboards typical of a wealthy Ottoman household. One of the most interesting facts is that the house still contains authentic items used by the Biščević family, offering a rare continuity between past and present. The main reception room, with its colourful carpets and elegant divan, reflects the social etiquette of the time, when hospitality was considered a central virtue. The women’s quarters reveal how privacy and domestic life were organised, while the riverside balcony provides a stunning view that once served as a quiet retreat for reading and conversation.
