The Hamam Museum

The Hamam Museum Mostar is one of the city’s most atmospheric cultural sites, housed in a restored 16th‑century Ottoman bathhouse. As the only preserved hamam in Herzegovina, it offers a rare opportunity to step inside a space once central to social life, ritual cleansing and community gatherings. One of the most interesting facts is that the hamam was originally built for women, making it a unique example of gender‑specific architecture in the region. Its thick stone walls, domed ceilings and small star‑shaped openings were designed to maintain heat and create a soft, diffused light that still gives the interior its distinctive ambience. Inside, visitors can explore the traditional sequence of rooms: the soyunmalık (changing area), the warm intermediate chamber and the hot steam room where marble slabs and basins once hosted elaborate bathing rituals. Exhibits explain how water was heated using an ingenious system of furnaces and channels, and how the hamam served not only hygiene but also social bonding, celebrations and relaxation.
