Hadum Mosque

About

Hadum Mosque is the architectural heart of Gjakova’s old bazaar, a landmark that captures the elegance of early Ottoman urban design. Built in 1594 by Mullah Hadum Efendi, it was the first major structure of the developing town, and its presence shaped the layout of surrounding shops, workshops, and caravan routes. The mosque’s harmonious proportions, stone‑brick patterns, and tall minaret make it one of Kosovo’s finest examples of classical Ottoman style. Inside, visitors find a calm prayer hall illuminated by soft daylight filtering through arched windows. The mihrab is one of the most interesting features, decorated with delicate floral motifs typical of 16th‑century craftsmanship. The wooden balcony, supported by carved beams, reflects the skill of Gjakova’s carpenters, while the painted interior details reveal layers of restoration after periods of conflict. The mosque’s courtyard is equally atmospheric. Here you can see the shadirvan fountain once used for ritual ablutions, as well as traces of former medrese buildings that made the complex an educational center. During festivals, the area around the mosque becomes a lively gathering place, echoing its historic role as the social core of the city.
