Hidden in the old quarter of Gjakova, the Bektashi Tekke is one of Kosovo’s most atmospheric spiritual landmarks. Founded in the 18th century, it served as a center of the Bektashi order, a Sufi tradition known for its openness, poetry, and philosophical approach to faith. The tekke survived fires, wars, and political upheavals, making it a rare witness to the city’s layered history. Inside, visitors find a serene courtyard leading to modest yet symbolically rich rooms. The semâhane, where rituals and spiritual gatherings once took place, preserves its wooden interior and soft light that filters through small windows. The dervish rooms display everyday objects used by the order, offering a glimpse into their ascetic lifestyle. One of the most interesting features is the collection of ritual instruments, including the nefir, a traditional horn used to call members to prayer. The tekke also houses tombs of respected sheikhs, marked with distinctive green cloths and carved wooden decorations. These tombs are not only memorials but also artistic expressions of Bektashi craftsmanship. Visitors often note the peaceful atmosphere—an unusual quietness in the heart of a lively city.

The Bektashi Tekke sits right in the heart of Gjakova’s old town, at 46 Ferid Grezda Street, also known locally along Qazim Bakalli Street, nestled within the lively Grand Bazaar complex known as Çarshia e Madhe. Founded back in 1790, this peaceful spiritual house of the Bektashi order was rebuilt after wartime damage and remains an active center of quiet reflection and tradition in western Kosovo. Just a short stroll away you’ll find the striking Hadum Mosque, one of the city’s oldest and most graceful Ottoman landmarks, with its elegant minaret rising above the bazaar streets. The Ethnographic Museum is nearby too, housed in a lovely traditional home that gives a warm glimpse into local life and craftsmanship from past centuries. The Clock Tower stands close by as well, a familiar landmark watching over the market area, while the historic Hani i Haraçise inn and the Sheh Emin Tekke add more layers of the town’s rich spiritual and commercial past. Everything sits within easy walking distance in the compact old quarter, so you can wander from one to the next without any rush, soaking up the atmosphere of this friendly western Kosovar city.
