St. John’s Fortress crowns the steep ridge above Kotor, offering one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Adriatic. Built and expanded over centuries—especially under Venetian rule—it formed the final defensive line protecting the bay. One of its most interesting facts is that the fortress incorporates layers from different eras: medieval walls, Venetian bastions, and later Austro‑Hungarian additions, all stitched together along the mountain slope. The climb to the fortress is part of the experience. The path of more than a thousand stone steps follows the old military route, passing small chapels, lookout points, and sections of wall where soldiers once monitored the bay. Midway up stands the Church of Our Lady of Health, built after a plague outbreak and still a beloved stop for visitors. Inside the fortress, you can explore ruined barracks, powder rooms, and narrow passages that reveal how the garrison lived in this exposed position. The upper terraces offer sweeping views of Kotor’s red‑roofed Old Town, the serpentine coastline, and the dramatic limestone peaks of Lovćen. St. John’s Fortress, also known as San Giovanni Fortress, sits high on the hillside above Kotor’s Old Town, reached by climbing the long stone path of roughly 1,350 steps that follows the medieval city walls. The main entrances start inside the Old Town near the North Gate or close to St Mary’s Church, so the climb begins right from the historic centre. Halfway up you pass the small Church of Our Lady of Health, a quiet stop with growing views over the bay. At the top the ruined walls open onto wide panoramas of the terracotta roofs below, the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding mountains. Down in the Old Town itself, just a short walk from the starting points, you will find the Maritime Museum in the Grgurina Palace, St Tryphon’s Cathedral with its twin towers, the Gallery of Solidarity inside Pima Palace, the Cats Museum and St Michael’s Church with its Lapidarium. The Sea Gate and Clock Tower mark the lively Square of Arms, while the narrow lanes hide other noble houses and small churches. The fortress climb is a rewarding part of any visit, pairing naturally with a slow exploration of the museums, palaces and squares that fill the walled town below.
