The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is Kotor’s most iconic monument, a Romanesque masterpiece dedicated to the city’s patron saint. Consecrated in 1166, it stands on the site of an earlier church that housed Saint Tryphon’s relics—an important fact that made Kotor a major medieval pilgrimage center. The cathedral’s twin towers are particularly interesting: although they appear symmetrical from afar, they were built in different centuries, giving them subtly different heights and styles. Inside, visitors encounter a rich blend of stone, fresco, and carved detail. The highlight is the Treasury, where reliquaries, gold‑embroidered vestments, and centuries‑old liturgical books are displayed. Among them is the famed silver arm reliquary of Saint Tryphon, an exquisite example of medieval craftsmanship. The cathedral’s interior also preserves fragments of 14th‑century frescoes, their soft colors still visible despite earthquakes and restorations. The Romanesque ciborium, supported by slender columns and decorated with intricate carvings, is one of the cathedral’s most admired features.

The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon stands at the heart of Kotor’s Old Town on Trg Svetog Tripuna, just a short walk from the Sea Gate and the Square of Arms. Consecrated in 1166, it is the town’s most important religious building and one of the finest Romanesque churches on the Adriatic coast, with twin towers that rise above the surrounding stone lanes. Step outside and you are immediately among the other landmarks of the historic centre. The Maritime Museum occupies the nearby Grgurina Palace, while the Gallery of Solidarity is housed in the ground floor of Pima Palace. The Cats Museum and St Michael’s Church with its Lapidarium sit a few minutes’ walk away, and the Clock Tower marks the lively Square of Arms just beyond. From the cathedral square you can also begin the climb up the city walls toward St John’s Fortress high above the bay, or wander south toward the quieter Gurdić Bastion. The cathedral itself is the natural centrepiece of any stroll through the Old Town, surrounded by noble palaces, small churches and the medieval fortifications that enclose the entire historic core.
