Clock Tower Kotor

The Clock Tower of Kotor stands proudly in Arms Square, serving as both a practical timekeeper and a symbol of civic life since its construction in 1602. One of its most interesting facts is its architectural blend: although built in the Baroque period, the tower carries clear Renaissance influences, reflecting the transitional style favored by Kotor’s Venetian administrators. Its slightly leaning structure is another curiosity, caused by centuries of settling on the soft ground near the square. Inside, the tower contains the remains of its original mechanical clock system, once operated by weights and gears that required regular manual winding. Though no longer functioning, the mechanism offers a glimpse into early urban engineering. The interior also preserves stone inscriptions and marks left by restorations after earthquakes, including the major one in 1667. At the base of the tower stands the famous pillory, a stone column where wrongdoers were publicly displayed as part of medieval justice. This detail adds a surprising social dimension to the monument, reminding visitors that the Clock Tower was not only a civic centerpiece but also a place of public order.
