The Gallery of Solidarity is one of Kotor’s most atmospheric cultural spaces, housed inside the elegant 17th‑century Pima Palace. Its name reflects a remarkable story: the gallery was founded after the 1979 earthquake, when artists from around the world donated works to help rebuild Kotor’s cultural life. This international gesture of support is one of the gallery’s most interesting facts, giving the collection a uniquely global character. Inside, visitors can explore paintings, graphics, sculptures, and ceramics from dozens of countries. The diversity is striking—Mediterranean landscapes, abstract compositions, and modernist experiments sit alongside traditional Balkan motifs. A highlight is the section dedicated to Montenegrin artists, offering insight into the region’s evolving artistic identity. The palace itself enhances the experience. Stone arches, carved balconies, and preserved fresco fragments create a dialogue between centuries-old architecture and contemporary art. Informational panels explain how the gallery’s collection grew through cultural exchanges, exhibitions, and continued donations, making it a living archive of artistic solidarity.

Location

The Gallery of Solidarity occupies the ground floor of the elegant Pima Palace, a Renaissance-Baroque building on Trg od Brašna, also known as Flour Square, right in the heart of Kotor’s Old Town. You reach it after a short walk through the narrow stone lanes inside the medieval walls. Just a few steps away stands St Tryphon’s Cathedral with its twin towers, while the Maritime Museum sits nearby in the Grgurina Palace. The Sea Gate opens onto the Square of Arms, where the Clock Tower rises, and the surrounding streets hold other noble houses and small churches. A short climb up the city walls leads to the ruins of San Giovanni Fortress high above the bay, offering wide views over the water and the red rooftops below. The gallery itself holds a collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures donated after the 1979 earthquake, displayed in the quiet rooms of the old palace. It fits easily into a relaxed stroll through the historic centre or a longer visit that includes the walls and the nearby waterfront.
