Vlaška Church is one of Cetinje’s most quietly intriguing landmarks, a small stone sanctuary that predates the city itself. Built in 1450 by shepherds who settled the plain, it originally stood as a humble wooden chapel. Its most unusual feature is the fence surrounding it: forged from captured Ottoman rifles in the 19th century, a symbolic transformation of weapons into protection for a sacred place. Inside, the church is modest but rich in atmosphere. The interior preserves 17th‑century iconostasis panels, painted in the local tradition with warm colors and expressive faces. You can also see several hand‑carved wooden icons, created by Montenegrin artisans who blended Byzantine forms with folk motifs. The church’s floor hides older stone slabs believed to mark early burials of Cetinje’s first families, adding a quiet archaeological layer to the visit. What makes Vlaška Church special is its intimacy. Unlike Cetinje’s grand monastery, this is a place where everyday history accumulated slowly: shepherds’ prayers, village gatherings, and the earliest traces of Montenegro’s capital. Vlaška Church sits quietly in the historic centre of Cetinje, Montenegro, along Baja Pivljanina street. It’s one of the oldest buildings in town, a simple Orthodox church that has stood here since the mid-fifteenth century. Just a short stroll away you’ll reach the Cetinje Monastery, the spiritual heart of the old capital with its white stone walls and important relics. A few more steps bring you to the Biljarda, the former home of the poet-ruler Petar II Petrović-Njegoš that now serves as a museum, and to King Nikola’s Palace, part of the National Museum complex where you can wander through the rooms of the last Montenegrin dynasty. Nearby streets also hold the elegant Djukanović Palace and several former foreign embassies that once made Cetinje feel like a miniature European capital. The Court Church at Ćipur is only a short walk further, and if you feel like a bit of a climb, Orlov Krš with the mausoleum of Bishop Danilo offers lovely views over the whole valley. Everything is close enough that you can take your time, moving from one quiet historic spot to the next without any hurry.
