Museum of Traditions

About

The Museum of Traditions in Sarandë is a small but engaging cultural space dedicated to preserving the everyday heritage of the Ionian coast. Rather than focusing on grand archaeological finds, it highlights the objects, crafts, and customs that shaped local life over the past two centuries. Its most interesting aspect is how personal it feels: many items were donated by families from Sarandë and nearby villages, creating a mosaic of lived history. Inside, the first thing to notice is the collection of traditional costumes. Embroidered vests, woolen skirts, and ornate belts show the craftsmanship of local artisans, especially the delicate gold-thread work typical of the region. The museum also displays household tools—loom parts, wooden chests, copper cookware—that reveal how homes were organized before industrial goods became common. A charming section is dedicated to maritime life. Old fishing nets, hand-carved boat models, and photographs of Sarandë’s early port illustrate the town’s long relationship with the sea. Nearby, you’ll find musical instruments such as the çifteli and lahuta, each tied to traditional Albanian storytelling.

Location

The Museum of Traditions in Sarandë sits in the old customs house overlooking the town wharf, right in the centre near the harbour on Rruga Flamurit. It’s an easy spot to reach while walking along the waterfront or the main streets of the town. Once you’re there, several other places are only a short stroll away. The Museum of Archaeology with its mosaic floor is right next door, and the Saranda Art Gallery is close by too. A few minutes’ walk brings you to the ruins of the ancient synagogue complex in the heart of town, while the seafront promenade and marina sit just in front. Higher up the hill, Lekursi Castle offers wide views over the bay and the lagoon. Everything is compact, so you can move easily from the traditions museum to the archaeology displays, the gallery, the synagogue remains or the castle viewpoint without any hurry.
