Lekursi Castle

About

Lekursi Castle is one of Sarandë’s most dramatic landmarks, perched high above the town with sweeping views of the Ionian Sea and the island of Corfu. Built in the 16th century by the Ottomans, it served as a strategic lookout point controlling the coastal routes. Its star-shaped plan is particularly interesting: the angular walls were designed to resist cannon fire, reflecting the military innovations of the era. Inside the castle grounds, visitors step into a broad courtyard framed by sturdy stone ramparts. Although the original interior buildings have not survived, the layout remains easy to read. You can walk along sections of the defensive walls, where narrow openings once housed archers and later small artillery. The views from these points are spectacular, especially at sunset when the sea turns copper and the hills glow. One of the most atmospheric features is the preserved cistern, a reminder of how isolated garrisons stored water during sieges. Nearby, you’ll find traces of living quarters—simple stone outlines that hint at the daily routines of soldiers stationed far from major cities. Today, the castle also hosts a restaurant and cultural events, blending historic architecture with modern life.

Location

Lekursi Castle sits high on a hill just outside Sarandë, a short drive or uphill walk from the town centre, overlooking the bay and the Ionian Sea. You’ll find it on the Lëkurës hillside above the city, with a paved road leading right up to the site. From the castle walls the views stretch over Sarandë below, the harbour, and on clear days as far as Ksamil and the island of Corfu. Back down in town you can easily reach the Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of Traditions and Galeria Art Saranda along the seafront. A bit further along the hills sits the Monastery of the Forty Saints, while the big archaeological park of Butrint lies a short trip south. Everything connects nicely, so after taking in the castle and its wide panoramas you can head back down to the waterfront museums or continue toward the other historic spots around the bay.
