Church of Saint Haralambos

About

Kisha e Shën Harallambit is one of Sarandë’s most graceful Orthodox landmarks, a bright, welcoming church that reflects the city’s blend of coastal serenity and deep spiritual tradition. Dedicated to Saint Haralambos, protector against illness and misfortune, it has long been a place where locals gather during major feasts, carrying candles and offering small gifts in thanks. Inside, the church is surprisingly rich in detail. The first thing that draws the eye is the vibrant set of frescoes covering the upper walls. Their colors—deep blues, warm golds, and soft reds—create a gentle glow even on cloudy days. Many depict scenes from the life of Saint Haralambos, whose calm expression is a recurring motif. The wooden iconostasis is another highlight. Carved with floral patterns and delicate arches, it separates the nave from the sanctuary and showcases icons painted in a distinctly southern Albanian style. Look closely at the small silver votive offerings hanging nearby; each represents a prayer or a moment of gratitude.

Location

The Church of Saint Charalambos sits right on the seafront boulevard in the centre of Sarandë, on Rruga Mustafa Matohiti, only a short walk from the main square and the harbour. It’s the large Orthodox church that stands out along the promenade. From here the waterfront is right in front of you, with the marina and the long pedestrian walkway stretching either side. Just a few steps away you’ll find the Museum of Traditions, Galeria Art Saranda and the Museum of Archaeology, all clustered near the old customs house area. The ruins of the ancient synagogue complex are also close by in the heart of town. Higher up the hills, Lekursi Castle and the Monastery of the Forty Saints offer wider views over the bay. Everything is within easy walking distance, so you can move from the church to the museums, the promenade or the hilltop sites without any rush.
