Church of the Holy Transfiguration

The Church of the Holy Transfiguration is one of Prilep’s most atmospheric sacred landmarks, set slightly above the old town and surrounded by quiet stone paths. Built in the 19th century, it reflects the mature phase of the Macedonian revival style: a modest exterior of pale stone, a wooden porch, and a bell tower that rises gently above the neighbourhood rooftops. Despite its simplicity, the church holds a remarkably rich interior. Inside, visitors encounter a luminous iconostasis carved from walnut and filled with icons painted by local masters. Several stand out for their expressive faces and unusually soft colour palette, blending Byzantine tradition with Prilep’s regional artistic character. The church also preserves fragments of older frescoes, discovered during restoration, which hint at an earlier structure on the same site. Among the most interesting features is the collection of liturgical objects—silver chalices, embroidered vestments, and handwritten service books—that reveal how the parish sustained its rituals during Ottoman times. Sunlight entering through narrow windows creates shifting patterns across the icons, giving the interior a warm, contemplative atmosphere.
