Silversmithing Museum

The Silversmithing Museum of Ioannina, housed within the fortified walls of the city’s castle, celebrates one of Epirus’ most renowned traditions: the art of silverwork. Ioannina has been a center of silversmithing since the Ottoman period, famous for its master craftsmen who supplied jewelry, weapons, and ornate household objects across the Balkans. The museum, created by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, presents this heritage with a modern, immersive approach. Inside, visitors follow the evolution of the craft from the 18th to the 20th century. Detailed displays explain traditional techniques such as filigree, repoussé, engraving, and casting, showing how artisans transformed raw metal into intricate works of art. Tools, workbenches, and molds illustrate the demanding skill behind each piece. One of the museum’s most engaging features is its audiovisual material, which demonstrates the entire process—from melting silver to the final decorative touches. The collection includes jewelry, religious objects, ornate belts, household utensils, and ceremonial weapons, each reflecting the region’s aesthetic identity. Particularly striking are the filigree pieces, where delicate silver threads form lace‑like patterns unique to Ioannina’s workshops.
