Lake Pamvotida, often called the Lake of Ioannina, sits in northern Greece. It lies right along the edge of Ioannina, the capital of the Epirus region. You can easily reach it near the address Averof 1, Ioannina 452 21, Greece, where the main waterfront area meets the historic center. The lakefront offers plenty to explore within short walking distance. Perched on a small peninsula extending into the water is Ioannina Castle, an ancient Byzantine fortress packed with history. Inside its walls, at the inner citadel known as Its Kale, you can visit the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina and the Silversmithing Museum, which highlights the city’s deep tradition of metal craftsmanship. Nearby within the fortress grounds stands the historic Aslan Pasha Mosque, home to the Municipal Ethnographic Museum. Just outside the fortress walls, closer to the city center, sits the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina. A big highlight is Ioannina Island, positioned right in the middle of the lake. A quick boat ride takes you across to this car-free islet, where narrow stone alleys lead to old monasteries like the Monastery of St. Nicholas Philanthropenos and the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon. The latter now houses the Ali Pasha Museum, dedicated to the infamous Ottoman ruler. If you head just a few miles north of the water, you will also reach the Perama Cave, famous for its limestone formations.
