Built during the Byzantine era and later rebuilt under Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha, it stands as the oldest Byzantine fortress in Greece and remains a vibrant, inhabited neighborhood surrounded by massive fortified walls. Because the castle spans a large area, exploring inside its walls brings you directly to several top cultural attractions. In the southeastern citadel of Its Kale, you can visit the Silversmithing Museum and the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina, both housed in restored stone buildings with great views of the lake. Over in the northern citadel, you will find the Municipal Ethnographic Museum set inside the 17th-century Aslan Pasha Mosque. Stepping right outside the main castle gates brings you to the tree-lined waterfront promenade along Lake Pamvotida. From the nearby docks, you can board a short ferry over to Ioannina Island to explore traditional stone alleys, historic monasteries, and the Ali Pasha Museum. Walking slightly uphill into the city center leads you to Litharitsia Park, home to the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina, and the nearby Municipal Art Gallery of Ioannina.
