The Cathedral Church of Ypapanti sits right in the heart of Kalamata’s old town, on Ypapanti Square (also called Ipapantis Square), Kalamata 241 00. It’s the city’s main cathedral, a big 19th-century building with twin bell towers and a solid dome that you can’t miss once you’re wandering the historic centre. The whole area lies just below the old Frankish castle that still watches over the town from its hill. Step outside and you’re already in the middle of things worth seeing. The castle itself is only a short stroll uphill—its walls and gates survived the big earthquake and give you a nice view back over the rooftops. A couple of minutes away you’ll find the Archaeological Museum of Messenia, packed with finds from the surrounding region, and the History and Folklore Museum housed in a pretty old mansion full of everyday objects from local life. The Military Museum is right nearby too if you like that sort of history. Just a little further is the Victoria Karelia Collection of Greek Traditional Costumes, a small but really lovely museum. Keep walking and you’ll reach March 23rd Square with the tiny Church of the Holy Apostles, a Byzantine gem linked to the start of the Greek War of Independence. The Kalograion Monastery is also close, known for its silk-weaving tradition.
