The Kalamata Municipal Railway Park is one of Greece’s most unusual museums: an open‑air railway collection set within a leafy urban park. Founded in 1986 on the grounds of the old Kalamata‑Port station and completed in 1990 after the city’s earthquake, it spans 54 acres and preserves the region’s railway heritage through original infrastructure and historic rolling stock. Visitors can explore the restored two‑storey station building, four boarding platforms, a water tower, and a 28‑metre metal footbridge that once served the central station. Scattered across the grounds are seven locomotives, a diesel wagon, first‑class passenger cars from the late 19th century, and freight wagons dating from 1885 to 1947—an unusually broad timeline for an outdoor museum. The park’s charm lies in how these industrial relics blend with nature: shady paths, ponds, and lawns create a relaxed setting where visitors can walk among steam engines and mechanical tools. Families will appreciate the playgrounds, sports courts, and the small snack bar housed in the old station.
