Imperial Mosque
About

The Imperial Mosque in Pristina, also known as the Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque, is one of the city’s most significant Ottoman-era landmarks. Built in 1461 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, it stands as a testament to Islamic architecture in Eastern Europe. Located near the Great Hamam and the Clock Tower, the mosque features a large central dome, a slender minaret, and a spacious prayer hall adorned with geometric and floral motifs. Its construction used carved yellow sandstone and traditional lime mortar, while the interior showcases painted decorations in the al secco technique. Over the centuries, the mosque has undergone several restorations, including major repairs after the 1955 earthquake and conservation efforts supported by Turkish heritage authorities in the early 2000s. Once briefly converted into a Catholic church during the Austro-Turkish wars, it later resumed its original function and remains an active place of worship. As a protected cultural monument, the Imperial Mosque continues to shape Pristina’s skyline and spiritual.
