The Newborn Monument in Pristina is a bold and evolving symbol of Kosovo’s independence and identity. Unveiled on 17 February 2008—the day Kosovo declared independence from Serbia—the monument consists of large capital letters spelling “NEWBORN,” originally painted bright yellow and signed by thousands of citizens. Located in front of the Palace of Youth and Sports, it quickly became a focal point for national pride and international attention. Designed by artist Fisnik Ismaili, the monument weighs nine tons and stretches 24 metres in length.
