Heroinat Memorial

Heroinat Memorial
About

The Heroinat Memorial in Pristina is a powerful tribute to the women of Kosovo who suffered and contributed during the 1998–1999 war. Unveiled on June 12, 2015—Kosovo’s Liberation Day—the memorial stands near the Newborn Monument in one of the city’s most central parks. It features a striking relief portrait of a Kosovar woman, composed of 20,000 bronze pins, each representing a woman who was raped during the conflict. Viewed from a distance, the pins form a unified face; up close, they reveal the scale of individual suffering. The design was based on photographic research that blended common facial features to create a symbolic representation of all women affected. The memorial’s dual perspective—intimate and collective—underscores both personal trauma and national resilience. Initiated by Alma Luma and designed by artist Ilir Blakçori, the Heroinat Memorial is one of the few monuments in Kosovo dedicated to women’s wartime experiences. It serves as a site of remembrance, recognition, and reflection, anchoring women’s stories in the country’s public memory and cultural landscape.
