About

The National Library of Kosovo, officially named “Pjetër Bogdani,” is a striking cultural landmark in Pristina known for its distinctive architecture and vital role in preserving the country’s intellectual heritage. Designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković and inaugurated in 1982, the building features a bold fusion of Byzantine and Ottoman influences, with 99 domes and a metal lattice façade that has sparked both admiration and controversy. Spanning over 16,000 square metres, the library houses more than 1.8 million items, including books, manuscripts, maps, and digital resources. Its mission is to collect, safeguard, and promote Kosovo’s documentary legacy while supporting research and education. Despite being repurposed during the 1999 conflict, the library has remained a symbol of resilience and national identity. Located within the University of Pristina campus, it also hosts exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events, making it a dynamic space for learning and dialogue. The National Library stands as both a functional institution and an architectural icon in Kosovo’s evolving cultural landscape.

Location

The National Library of Kosovo, also known as the National University Library “Pjetër Bogdani,” is located on Agim Ramadani Street, in the heart of Pristina’s city center. Its striking and unconventional brutalist architecture, designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković and completed in 1982, makes it one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The library sits within a pleasant green area, offering a tranquil setting that is rare in central Pristina. Directly across the road from the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, the library is surrounded by several of Pristina’s major attractions, including the National Gallery of Kosovo, the Christ the Saviour Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, the statue of Ibrahim Rugova, and Mother Teresa Square. The area is also close to the Newborn Monument, the Heroinat Memorial, and the city’s main pedestrian boulevard, Bulevardi Nënë Tereza, where you’ll find numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops. This central location makes the National Library of Kosovo an ideal starting point for exploring the city’s cultural, historical, and civic highlights.
