About

Freilichtmuseum Schwerin-Mueß is a living window into Mecklenburg’s rural past, preserving the authentic atmosphere of a 19th-century village on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin. Established in 1970 within the historic fishing and farming village of Mueß, the open-air museum spans over 5.5 hectares and features 17 original buildings, including a village school, shepherd’s cottage, barns, and a traditional Low German hall house. These structures, many in their original locations, are furnished to reflect the everyday life of Mecklenburg’s rural population from the 17th to early 20th centuries. Visitors can explore orchards, herb gardens, and the restored school garden, while seasonal events bring the site to life with music, crafts, and historical reenactments. The museum’s immersive setting and folkloric collections offer a rich educational experience, making it a vital cultural institution for understanding regional identity, agricultural heritage, and the rhythms of village life in northern Germany.
