Museum Schleifmühle Schwerin is a rare example of 18th-century industrial heritage, preserving the craft of stone grinding in a picturesque setting near the Fauler See. Originally built in 1704 as a powder mill, it was later transformed into a tannery and finally into a grinding mill in 1755 under Duke Christian Ludwig II. Powered by an undershot waterwheel, the mill used the natural gradient between the Fauler and Schweriner lakes to drive its machinery. For over a century, artisans here cut and polished decorative stones for the ducal court, producing everything from floor tiles to ornate walking stick handles. Restored and reopened as a museum in 1985, the Schleifmühle now offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of stoneworkers through its working exhibits, historical tools, and guided tours. The site is a designated technical monument and part of Schwerin’s residence ensemble, combining craftsmanship, history, and natural beauty in one immersive experience.
Schwerin GermanyMuseum Schleifmühle Schwerin is located at Schleifmühlenweg 1, 19061 Schwerin, Germany, situated on the edge of the grand Schwerin Schlossgarten (Castle Gardens) and near the outlet of the Fauler See (Lazy Lake). The museum is housed in a historic water-powered grinding mill, which has been in operation for over 300 years, where skilled craftsmen once cut, polished, and shaped large natural stones, primarily granite boulders, into decorative slabs, sarcophagi, and fireplace surrounds for the dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Today, the museum features a functional demonstration plant showcasing the traditional stone-cutting and polishing techniques, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the industrial history embedded within Schwerin’s residence ensemble, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. The Schleifmühle is also an external location for wedding ceremonies, adding to its cultural significance. Nearby are Schwerin Castle, Schlossgarten, and the city center, making it an accessible and enriching cultural site for visitors interested in history, craft, and architecture.
