The Théâtre des Célestins, standing proudly on Place des Célestins in Lyon, is one of France’s few theatres with over two centuries of continuous activity. Its origins trace back to the Celestine convent that occupied the site until the late 18th century, before the first theatre was inaugurated in 1792. After devastating fires in 1871 and 1880, architect Gaspard André rebuilt the theatre in the elegant Italian style, giving it the neoclassical façade admired today. Inaugurated in 1877, and later renovated in 2005, the venue blends historic grandeur with modern functionality. Today, as a municipal theatre run by the City of Lyon, it offers a rich repertoire ranging from classical works to contemporary productions, making it a cultural landmark that embodies Lyon’s artistic spirit.
