Lugdunum Roman Theatre
The Lugdunum Roman Theatre, perched on Fourvière Hill, is one of the oldest theatres in France and a striking reminder of Lyon’s ancient past. Built around 15 BCE during the reign of Augustus, it formed part of the Roman colony of Lugdunum, then the capital of Gaul. Originally designed to host dramatic performances and civic gatherings, the theatre could seat thousands of spectators, reflecting the city’s importance in the Roman Empire. Its semicircular tiers, orchestra, and stage area still evoke the grandeur of classical architecture.
