Fort de Vaise
The Fort de Vaise, built between 1831 and 1835, is one of Lyon’s key 19th‑century fortifications. Strategically located on the heights of Vaise in the city’s 9th arrondissement, it was part of a defensive ring designed to protect Lyon from external threats during a turbulent period in French history. Constructed with thick stone walls, bastions, and underground passages, the fort reflects the military engineering of its time. Though it never faced combat, it played an important role in Lyon’s defense system and later served various military functions.
