Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio
The Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio is one of Milan’s oldest and most symbolic churches, founded in 379 by Saint Ambrose on a site dedicated to early Christian martyrs. Rebuilt in Romanesque style and completed in 1099Wikipedia, it remains a masterpiece of Lombard medieval architecture, instantly recognisable by its twin brick bell towers and spacious atrium that once welcomed pilgrims. Inside, the basilica preserves extraordinary treasures, including the golden altar commissioned by Archbishop Angilbert II and the Sacello di San Vittore, a small chapel glowing with early medieval mosaics. Still an active place of worship, the basilica continues to shape Milan’s spiritual identity, offering visitors a rare encounter with sixteen centuries of faith, art and history in the heart of the city.

Nearby stand the Bramante cloisters of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the Portico della Canonica designed by Bramante, the archaeological site of Santa Valeria church with early Christian tombs, and a short walk to the Milan Archaeological Museum, San Lorenzo Basilica, and the vibrant Navigli district.
