Excavations uncovered the remains of a Roman sanctuary dedicated to the Sun and Moon, later transformed into an Islamic ribat, a fortified religious retreat. Location

The Archaeological Site of Alto da Vigia is located on a low clifftop above the Atlantic coast in the Rodízio area of Colares, in the municipality of Sintra, Lisbon District, western Portugal. It lies immediately south of Praia das Maçãs beach, close to the mouth of the Colares River, with the seaside village of Praia das Maçãs, the nearby beach of Praia Grande, and the broader Sintra-Cascais Natural Park all within a short distance, while the historic town of Sintra with its palaces and castles is a few kilometres inland.
