The Church of the Cross in Lahti is a striking modernist landmark designed by Alvar Aalto and completed in 1978, standing on the historic hill of Kolkanmäki. Its dark red brick exterior and monumental concrete bell tower form a powerful silhouette in the cityscape, intentionally aligned with Lahti City Hall to create an architectural axis across the market square. Inside, the church opens into a bright, serene space defined by white surfaces, natural light and Aalto’s characteristic attention to acoustics.
