Lahti City Hall is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, a refined Art Nouveau building designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1912. Its dark brick façades, copper details and tower give it a dignified presence along Mariankatu, an avenue of notable cultural value. Over its long history, the building has housed municipal services ranging from the police and fire brigade to the city library, while the council chamber has remained in continuous use. Recent renovations have carefully restored original interiors and furniture while discreetly modernising the building for contemporary work. The formerly open courtyard has been transformed into a covered, elegant space used for events and public gatherings, enhancing the building’s role as a civic hub. Today, Lahti City Hall stands as a testament to Saarinen’s architectural vision and to the city’s commitment to preserving its historic urban identity.
