Gustavianum is one of Uppsala’s most significant historic buildings and a cornerstone of the university’s heritage. Dating back to the early 17th century, it once served as the main building of Uppsala University and still carries the atmosphere of centuries of scholarship. Its most famous feature is the Anatomical Theatre, built in the 1660s under Olof Rudbeck, where medical students once observed dissections in a dramatic tiered setting that remains remarkably well preserved. The museum’s exhibitions explore archaeology, cultural history, and scientific discovery, showcasing treasures such as Viking‑era artefacts, ancient Egyptian objects, and items from early academic collections.
