The Linnaeus Garden is Sweden’s oldest botanical garden and one of Uppsala’s most atmospheric historical sites, offering a vivid glimpse into the world of Carl Linnaeus. Founded in 1655 by Olof Rudbeck and later redesigned according to Linnaeus’s own plans, it preserves the 18th‑century layout with geometric beds and carefully arranged plantings. Around a thousand species are cultivated here, all known to have been grown by Linnaeus and organised according to his sexual system, creating a living illustration of his scientific work. Enclosed by a wooden fence in central Uppsala, the garden feels like a secluded oasis where history and botany meet. Beside it stands the Linnaeus Museum, housed in the scientist’s former home, which adds a personal dimension to the visit.
