Kristiansand Cannon Museum
The Kristiansand Cannon Museum offers one of the most dramatic military heritage experiences in Norway, centred around a colossal coastal artillery gun from the Second World War. Located on Møvik Fort just outside the city, the site was built by German forces to control the Skagerrak strait, forming part of a vast defensive network along the coast. The main attraction is the massive 38‑cm cannon, one of the largest ever installed on land, whose scale becomes fully apparent as visitors walk around its concrete emplacements and underground facilities. Restored buildings, exhibitions, and guided routes explain the fort’s strategic role, daily life for soldiers, and the engineering behind the weapon system. Surrounded by open coastal scenery, the museum blends history, technology, and landscape, offering a powerful insight into wartime Norway and the enduring significance of the region’s defences.

The museum is housed in Batterie Vara, a WWII German coastal fort built to control shipping lanes between Norway and Denmark, and it showcases the world’s second-largest land-based cannon ever mounted. Nearby, the entire Møvik Fort area invites exploration. Visitors can walk through an extensive network of bunkers, casemates, and underground tunnels that once moved ammunition to the massive 38 cm naval guns. A restored 600 mm gauge ammunition railway now gives rides over 1800 m of track, and displays of uniforms, vehicles, and WWII artifacts illustrate daily life for soldiers and laborers at the fortress. The site sits within a coastal landscape ideal for hiking, with trails leading to hidden gun positions, viewpoints, and bathing places along the shoreline. The views across the fjord are expansive, and the area is known for its greenery and peaceful atmosphere.
