Location

The Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden, University of Agder is located at Gimleveien 27 on the historic Gimle Gård estate in Kristiansand, just east of the city center. Set in the former outbuildings of a 19th-century manor, the museum shares its park-like grounds with the Gimle Gård manor house museum and a botanical garden featuring more than 2,000 plants. Nearby, the Gimle Gård manor house invites visitors into period rooms, collections of furniture and art, and an English-style landscape park that was laid out in the early 1800s. The botanical garden itself is free and open year-round, with a geologic rock garden, herb and monastery gardens, and colorful fuchsia bushes that make it a peaceful spot for a walk. Inside the museum you’ll find zoological, botanical, and geological exhibits covering the region’s natural history from the Ice Age to the present, plus themed displays, insects, reptiles, and a museum shop and café. The museum sits on the University of Agder’s Gimlemoen campus, so Vitensenteret Sørlandet science center with its planetarium is close by, as is the wooded Baneheia recreation area with illuminated trails, lakes for swimming, and city viewpoints.
