Bredalsholmen Shipyard and Preservation Centre

About

Bredalsholmen Shipyard and Preservation Centre in Kristiansand is a living monument to Norway’s maritime craftsmanship, dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historic wooden vessels. Located on a small island just off the city’s coast, the shipyard maintains traditional boatbuilding techniques that have shaped coastal life for generations. Visitors can observe skilled craftsmen at work, repairing hulls, shaping timber, and keeping age‑old methods alive in an authentic workshop environment. The centre also cares for a fleet of heritage ships, many of which are still seaworthy and used for cultural events and educational programmes. Its atmosphere blends industry, history, and coastal scenery, offering a rare insight into the labour and knowledge behind Norway’s maritime identity. As both a working yard and a cultural institution, Bredalsholmen stands as an important guardian of seafaring traditions in Southern Norway.

Location

Bredalsholmen Shipyard and Preservation Centre is located on the islet of Bredalsholmen in Kristiansand, a national center for the maintenance and repair of historic vessels. The shipyard dates from 1876 and features a traditional dry dock where skilled craftsmen preserve old steel and wooden ships using authentic techniques, making it a living museum of maritime heritage. Nearby, the highlight is D/S Hestmanden, the last remaining ship from Norway’s Nortraship fleet, which sailed in both World Wars. Now restored, the steamship serves as a unique museum and war memorial at the dock, with exhibitions about war sailors, a short film, and access to its original 1911 steam engine still in operation. Walking the shipyard grounds, visitors can see historic boats, workshops, and riveting demonstrations, while guided tours give behind-the-scenes access to the dry dock and craftsmen at work. Bredalsholmen is a short drive or bus ride from central Kristiansand, so it’s easy to combine with city attractions. The lively Fiskebrygga fish market is close, offering seafood restaurants and canal-side views. Kilden Performing Arts Centre, an architectural landmark on the harbor, hosts concerts and theatre year-round. Odderøya peninsula is nearby with coastal trails, beaches, Kunstsilo art museum, and panoramic viewpoints over the fjord.
