Christiansholm Fortress

About

Christiansholm Fortress stands on a rocky promontory by Kristiansand’s shoreline, a compact yet imposing reminder of the city’s coastal defences. Built in the late 17th century to protect the harbour from naval attacks, the circular stone structure has remained remarkably intact, its thick walls and cannon positions still evoking the strategic vigilance of its past. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the fortress offers sweeping views across the bay, making it as much a scenic landmark as a historical one. Today it serves as a cultural venue and a beloved gathering place, hosting concerts, exhibitions and summer events that animate its courtyard. Its blend of military heritage and relaxed seaside atmosphere makes Christiansholm a distinctive stop for visitors exploring Kristiansand’s waterfront.

Christiansholm Fortress
Location

Christiansholm Fortress is located in the center of Kristiansand, on Østre Strandgate 52B, right by the harbour and close to the city’s waterfront promenade. It began as a coastal defence fort on a small islet and is now connected to the mainland, making it easy to reach from the downtown area. Nearby, the fortress is surrounded by some of Kristiansand’s best-known sights. Fiskebrygga is close by and is one of the city’s most popular waterfront areas, with restaurants, summer activity, and a lively harbour atmosphere. Kristiansand Cathedral is also within easy reach from the fortress and adds an important historical and architectural highlight to a walk through the centre. The main shopping street, Markens gate, is nearby too, so visitors can combine history with cafés, shops, and city life in the same visit. For a scenic seaside experience, the promenade along the harbour and the wider central waterfront area give the fortress a pleasant setting and make it a good stop on a longer sightseeing route.
