Liepāja Concert Hall

Concert Hall Liepāja, also known as “Lielais dzintars” or the Great Amber, is one of Latvia’s most striking contemporary cultural buildings. Opened in 2015, it was designed by Austrian architect Volker Giencke, who envisioned a glowing, amber‑coloured structure inspired by the region’s deep connection to Baltic amber. Its bold, faceted form has become a modern symbol of Liepāja, visible from across the city and especially radiant at sunset. Inside, the building is designed with exceptional acoustics in mind. The main hall, the Great Hall, seats more than a thousand visitors and is home to the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in the Baltics. Its warm wooden interior and carefully engineered sound environment make it a favourite venue for classical concerts, contemporary performances, and international festivals. An interesting aspect of the concert hall is its multifunctional layout. Alongside the main auditorium, it houses smaller halls, rehearsal rooms, exhibition spaces, and educational facilities, creating a vibrant cultural hub. The building’s transparent walls and open design reflect the idea of music as a shared, accessible experience.
